A community
From one hand to another
I believe community gatherings like farmer's markets or flea markets can build so many relationships and connections.
Entering the space
This past Saturday, my ba ngoai (Grandma) wanted to go to the Morgan Hill just to check it out and of course bring home an apple pie for my ong ngoai (Grandpa). At first I was hesitant because I wanted to stay in my stagnant routine, but then I realized it's a great opportunity to get outside, connect with my local community, and spend time with my grandma.
As we arrived, it was already in the middle to the end of the market, yet still so lively.
COmmunication
At each stop I made, I wanted to make it known that my intention first and foremost, was kindness and to listen. I wasn't there to pitch myself, but to actually hear what they were providing.
Each interaction, I was able to see what each person's passion was. what drove them to this point, and being a person who was truly interested. Not until I knew there was some connection and wanted to photograph something did I share, "I'm a local photographer from Gilroy. Would it be okay for me to photograph your things? If you'd like, I can share them with you." And it was always shared with gentleness and openness. I made sure they felt that it was an option, not an obligation. Luckily, it was met with kindness as well.
My Reflection
I want to attend more community gatherings like the farmer's market, not just because I'm able to practice photography, but also because it pours into my soul. It pours in new experiences, trying new food, supporting various communities, learning about someone new, supporting farmers, and showing that this is a necessity to our society.
